Retailers Form an Alliance to Promote Food Conservation

Big…The Food Marketing Institute may be well known to insiders as a massive trade show, idea marketplace, and schmooze fest. But the group is serious about food conservation.

In partnership with the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), and other commercial stakeholders, FMI participates in the Food Waste Reduction Alliance Project. The stated goal of the group is to decrease the amount of food that ends up in landfills and to increase the amount of food donated to those in need.

Smallin.gredients, an Austin, TX based micro-grocer has managed to accomplish something fairly remarkable. In six months of operation, the store has sent exactly zero pounds of food waste to landfills. Simply and consistently applying composting, recycling, and reuse have yielded amazing results. The store is part of a movement in that part of the country that is dedicated to fixing the food waste problem on a micro level.
